About
This website has been created by a mum who loves cooking, but who is frustrated by the lack of reading material aimed at 8 -12 year old girls.
The magazine racks are filled with princess and disney magazines and then go straight to the teenage boyfriend obsessed popster magazines. There is nothing in between. This website features stories about Jasmine and Lucy, two girls who set up a cafe in their mum’s garage.
The content of this website is remnisicent of ‘Bunty’ and ‘The Brownie’, comics that filled this gap in the
1970′s. These titles were required reading, before we hit the age when ‘Jackie’ came to dominate our every move. These comics celebrated friendship, adventure and life. True, they also promoted roles for girls that today seem limiting and outdated. So this website aims to take the best bits, and leave the Stepford Wives training in the past. The other aim is to prompt an interest in cooking. The ages of 8 – 12 are a perfect time to learn. The details of all the recipes Jasmine and Lucy try out in their cafe are included in the recipe section. The recipes are relatively easy, but all cooking requires some basic skills. The cooking skills section gives clear instructions for each separate skill.
I have made a deliberate attempt to keep down the cost of the ingredients and equipment. It makes no sense to spend a fortune someone’s first adventures in cooking when there are plenty of excellent recipes which don’t cost much to cook.
I do recommend most strongly that an adult reads through the recipe that is about to be attempted, and also supervises. You will know better than anyone the capabilities of your child. It would be great to hear how people have got on with their cooking at home. A finished dish, however humble, is always something to be celebrated.
In real life Jasmine has a big brother, Ben, who loves to bake. Cooking for Girls is proving popular so we have set about creating site to encourage boys to cook – have a look: Cooking for Boys.
Thanks for visiting us and good luck in the kitchen!
